Winners & Upsets From France to J-Bay

Winners & Upsets From France to J-Bay

Date: 2019-07-26

At the Plage du Santocha, Capbreton, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, Juliette Lacome (FRA) and Tiago Carrique (FRA) have won the Quiksilver and Roxy Junior Pro 40. Claiming victory in the Final bouts against Melania Suarez Diaz (ESP) and Kauli Vaast (FRA) held in good three-to-four foot surf at Santocha.

This was stop number 4 of 5 on the 2019 World Surf League (WSL) European Junior Qualifying Series (JQS), the Quiksilver and Roxy Junior Pro 40 have been treated to great conditions all week after a month-long flat spell in France.

Last week in Jeffreys Bay the action-packed Finals Day at the Corona Open J-Bay saw no shortage of drama and with six near-perfect 9-point rides and extremely close heats to complete the CT's halfway marker.

South Africa, Carissa Moore (HAW) and Gabriel Medina (BRA) won the Corona Open J-Bay, the sixth stop on the 2019 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), in four-to-six foot waves at Jeffreys Bay. The win is a first in South Africa for World Champions Moore and Medina, and also marks their first CT wins this season to strengthen their respective World Title campaigns.

Meanwhile in Padang Padang, Bali, Indonesia,Benji Brand received a personal invitation from Mick Fanning to compete in the 2019 Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang. And on the best day of the year thus far at The Balinese Pipeline, Brand did not disappoint.

In grinding six-to-eight footPadang Padang barrels, the rapidly ascending 23-year-old South African who cut his teeth growing up on the North Shore of Oahu, topped a field of 16 of the world's best tube riders with an electric all-day performance to claim the Cup. "I was so surprised when I heard that Mick had invited me to compete in this event," said Brand. "I've watched so many of my heroes compete out here in past years. To be recognized by them is the best prize. The all-day Padang barrels with only a couple friends out doesn't hurt too."
