Face-To-Face With The Oceans Economy

Face-To-Face With The Oceans Economy

Date: 2019-11-29

Buoyed by the support from the national government, the Leader of Government Business and MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube is confident that a long-lasting solution to congestion at the Durban Port Terminal is within reach.

Over the past few days she has had a series of meetings with the Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan - Transnet management, eThekwini Municipality, Durban Chamber of Commerce and stakeholders in the maritime industry.

Dube-Ncube commented this morning : "We recall that during the launch of the District Service Delivery Initiative by the President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa here in Durban, big business raised concerns about congestion in our Durban Port. Both the President and our Premier Sihle Zikalala assured port users of speed in resolving the matter."

She has emphasized that a decision has been made to set up a task team involving all stakeholders. This team will use an integrated approach, as guided by the District Service Delivery Model, to turn around the situation.

"An efficient port is a very important asset for any country as it acts as a conduit for global and intra-regional trade. Over 90% of trade in Africa occurs by sea. As guided by Operation Phakisa, we are determined to invest in the development of quality infrastructure. This in turn will help in in dealing with long ship waiting times to ensure that we are on par with other port systems around the world," she said, also thanking Ramaphosa and Zikalala for leading all efforts aimed at stimulating the oceans economy working with all stakeholders. She praised industry stakeholders for suggesting concrete proposals, which are being processed by national government. These include the possibility of relocating Transnet Head office from Joburg to Durban considering that the ports are along the Indian Ocean.
