Two Durban Fishermen

Two Durban Fishermen

Date: 2014-05-09

The two men who were injured by a leaping Marlin during a fishing competition off Durban on Monday, 26 April 2014, are in a stable condition.

This was confirmed by Dr Augusta Dorning, hospital manager of Netcare St Augustine's Hospital, where the two were admitted after the incident. Dr Dorning added that the men, who had both suffered serious wounds as the fish leaped into the boat, were doing well.

Dr Dorning asked the media and public to please respect the privacy of the men and their families. "The two suffered severe trauma. It is imperative that they are given the chance to rest and fully recover," she added.

After the incident the two fishermen were transferred to a sea rescue craft where they were treated by a Netcare 911 paramedic assisted by National Sea Rescue Institute medics. The men were then taken to the sea rescue station from where they were transferred to hospital by a Netcare 911 ambulance.

The Marlin, which was estimated to have been in the region of 140kg, apparently leaped aboard the boat after one of the fisherman had hooked it and fought it close to the boat. Marlin are game fish with long bills and are known for their fighting prowess and to leap when hooked on rod and reel.
