Ashton Celebrates "One Day Without Shoes"

Ashton Celebrates "One Day Without Shoes"

Date: 2013-04-18
Ashton once again took up the challenge today to go barefoot for a day and the students and parents donated generously to the campaign. In sympathy with the thousands of children and adults across the globe who do not have the luxury of a pair of shoes. The target was to collect more than the 2012 total, and the students rose to the occasion and collected 1508 pairs of shoes, 300 pairs more than 2012. This is the third year Ashton has participated in this global awareness drive, and this year One Day Without Shoes internationally will be celebrated on 16 April.

"The generosity of our students and parents was overwhelming and the number of new shoes that were donated is so appreciated. R A Padayachee School, our Junior College social responsibility partner, sent in lists with the names, shoe sizes and gender for every student at their school," said Mrs Holmes, Head of the Junior College. "Our students attached lists to boxes, selected shoes and placed these into the boxes ensuring that every child at RA Padayachee will receive a pair of shoes," said Mrs Holmes.

Shoes will also be sent to Greytown Children's Home, NOAH, LIV and Kwa Mama and the shoes will find their way to some needy feet just in time for winter.

In conjunction with the "One Day Without Shoes' drive, the students also donated R10 towards the sponsorship of the two "Team Maverick" vehicles piloted by Guy Bower and Matthew Bower, who will be supporting the Put Foot Foundation and LIV. Just over R7000 was collected for this worthy cause. These vehicles will be part of the 64 teams who will be raising awareness of the daily plight of children without shoes as well as the distribution shoes into seven countries. The Put Foot Rally will be held in July and the progress will be covered by the electronic and print media.
