Vacation in KZN and fall in love with your province

As overseas travel is still virtually unattainable for most South Africans, holidaying close to home is the best alternative for those who still want to get away and enjoy their hard earned leave.

We love Maputaland, which stretches from the scenic splendour of iSimangaliso Wetland Park in St. Lucia in the south to South Africa's border with Mozambique in the north.

We have been going there for over twenty years and still marvel at one of South Africa's last great stretches of untouched coastline, which has many pristine beaches and is home to a vast array of land based and marine wildlife.

Much of the area falls under the Greater St Lucia National Park, which is supplemented by provincial and private game reserves. The beautiful Kosi Lake System in the far north offers wonderful walking, gentle canoeing and snorkelling. Marvel at the unusual fish traps, which date back hundreds of years.

We recently stayed with Ray and Jody at Kosi Bay Casitas. They run a cool self-catering establishment as well as a cosy, fully catered restaurant and bar, conveniently placed next to a cool swimming pool.

They are also pet friendly and our dog Lupa loves visiting their four friendly pooches.

Recently we were treated to a fun filled day on the Lakes with our guide Ashley, Kosi Bay Casitas' resident boatman and guide.

Besides the sheer glory of this lake system, we went snorkeling with schools of soldier fish, admiring flocks of pink Flamingos, spying on some shy hippos and tracking massive manta rays.

Here you will find warm, tropical waters lapping the - long, practically deserted beaches -where turtles come ashore to breed. Coastal reefs are home to a myriad of iridescent tropical fish and brightly coloured birds flit among the trees. It truly is a magical paradise. Who needs to go anywhere else when we have all this on our doorstep?
