Festival of Chariots attracts thousands

Date: 2015-04-10
Religious leader, Hare Krisna devotees and local community joined together in a colourful parade on the beachfront in Durban marking the auspicious Festival of Chariots.

The Yatra Ratra Festival is organized by the Hari Krishna movement and celebrated around the world. it began more than 5000 years ago in the Indian holy city of Jagannatha Puri, and is centered on the drawing of three chariots bearing the statues of Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladeva and Subhadra along the city's streets. Jagannath is considered a form of Vishnu, a god in the Hindu pantheon, or his avatar, Krishna. This year's 25th celebrations was inspired to reverberate the same unity that came about at the first festival.

"Today, King Goodwill Zwelithini is talking about social cohesion, and we want to be able to promote that though the festival. As long as we see the differences, we'll never achieve peace, but if we all relies that we are the different players or, musicians playing in the same orchestra, we will relies that we can be individuals, but we don't have to compete with one another, our 'individualness' completes the picture," said Indrayaumna Swamiÿ See more on page 3.
