Honouring Madiba

Honouring Madiba

Date: 2019-08-02

18 July marks the day all South Africans and the world at large celebrate the birthday (Nelson Mandela International Day) of former president Nelson Mandela. More over, as South Africans we have dedicated the month in honour of the life and legacy of Nelson "Madiba" Mandela. Taking inspiration from the wise words of Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world", 27 July was a day filled with smiles, laughter and joyous energy as the Nation Builders team played their part by visiting the Nkobongo Resource Centre in an effort to inspire the children of the community to improve their academic results by prioritising reading. Established in 2004 and run by Zamo Mngadi (project manager) with the help of local volunteers, the Nkobongo Resource Centre serves approximately 130 kids between the ages of 3 and 20 years.

Desiree Gengan, Communications and Marketing Manager of Nation Builders and an educator by profession emphasised to the children the significance of reading and the impact it has on their results in other subjects at school. She encouraged the children to prioritise daily reading in order to excel academically and provided practical steps on how to improve their reading abilities. She also inspired them to have a positive attitude towards their education, to be diligent, hardworking and disciplined at all times.

The Nation Builders team was excited to see the work being done at the Nkobongo Resource Centre and the effort being made to assist the children. A total of 150 books were donated by team to add to the centre's library and each child present was also given a book together with a hamper to encourage them to continue reading. In honour of Madiba, his love for children and education members of the Nation Builders team also took some time to read together with the children.

Zamo Mngadi of the Nkobongo Resource Centre expressed her gratitude for the amazing donation and the time invested into both the resource centre and the lives of the children. Nation Builders believes that investing in the next generation will produce strong leaders for our communities in the future.
