Unity in Action For Women

Unity in Action For Women

Date: 2015-08-21
The Women Indaba 2015 has seen over 100 ladies from KwaZulu-Natal's arts and culture sector gather in Richard's Bay to be part of the conference. The initiative by the provincial Department of Arts and Culture is working to find ways to equip these women with the necessary skills to further themselves and their families using their expertise. The two day event is themed 'Unity in Action For Women's Socio-economic Freedom'.

Department HOD Sibongile Nzimande delivered the keynote address during the conference's first session yesterday, 14 August 2015. She emphasised the need for women to emancipate themselves using the platforms given by the department and provincial government as a whole.

"Gender has no mind, the artists gathered here need to learn to plan ahead to sustain themselves," said Nzimande. The HOD also encouraged those in attendance to tell their own stories through literature, stressing those women who look after their communities need to be celebrated.

The second session saw discussions on social ills and the impact they have on women. This was facilitated by founder of Indoni South Africa Dr Nomcebo Mthembu, renowned artist Tu Nokwe as well as representatives from the Social Development and Justice Departments.

An exhibition celebrating Busisiwe Mhlongo, Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu, Nombeko Nokwe, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Magaret Chuene Mncadi, Dorothy Nyembe, Victoria Mxenge, Nokuthela Dube, Ruth First, who took part in the country's liberation struggle was also being staged.

Day two has been more focused on women as an economic powerhouse as well as how to market and sell goods. The indaba's outcomes will be used to further align the Department's strategy with the needs of women in this sector.
