Durban Clean up and beach closures

Durban Clean up and beach closures

Date: 2017-03-17

Clean-up operations at Durban's beaches are still ongoing, following strong tidal waves that resulted in high volumes of sand and water overflowing onto the promenade and damaging infrastructure.

The second day of the clean-up operation has seen an estimated 120m3 of beach sand being cleaned-up, using specialised machinery and two teams of staff. To ensure timeous restoration of the promenade, staff working hours have been extended by three hours.

Contracted service providers working on both the infrastructure and horticultural areas (mainly damaged sand dune areas) are continuing their operations to recover useable materials and dispose off those that have been damaged.

In the central region, uShaka, Addington and Wedge Beaches have been re-opened for public use. Ansteys Beach in Bluff has also been re-opened. This was done after the Sharks Board advised that it is safe to do so as the safety gear has been checked and put in place. Other beaches remain closed while the Municipality and other stakeholders monitor the situation.
