Crawford La Lucia Astroturf ready for action
This R7million hockey turf is not only an asset to the school but also a benefit to all hockey players and surrounding clubs in the community. "It has been a long-pending dream for CrawfordSchoolsª KZN hockey players to have an Astroturf where they can develop their skills and represent their school", says Richard Kohne, Head of Sport at Crawford College La Lucia.
Universally Astroturf surfaces are regarded as the standard for field hockey performance and are the favourite among coaches and players for its playability, durability and low maintenance. "Astroturf surfaces have transformed the game of field hockey into a fast-paced, highly skilled pursuit", adds Kohne.
The installation of the Astroturf started in mid-January 2013. It covers one full-size field (100 x 60 meters), plus a lighting level for night games and a technical area with state of the art video analysis including a small grandstand for a 1000 people seating.
"Negotiations with a prominent Durban Hockey Club are currently underway and this club will in all likelihood use Crawford La Lucia as their home base. Once everything has been confirmed and finalized an announcement will be made", says Kohne. "It will also mean considerable hockey opportunities for the local community as well as for players of all ages to become actively involved in hockey on the Crawford La Lucia campus in the future,", he continues.
Crawford La Lucia is fortunate in the quality and scope of their facilities. "We have no doubt that the next generation of hockey players who learnt their trade on these fields will continue to look back with gratitude and appreciation at those who made the dream possible" says Kohne.
