Adventures with Kingsley Holgate - Outside edge expedition
Date: 2017-04-21
It was a decade ago when the Kingsley Holgate Foundation team set off on a world-first adventure to circumnavigate the African continent in Land Rovers. How time flies! It seems like just the other day in the week of Africa Malaria Day, 25th April 2007, we once again dipped the much travelled Zulu calabash, this time into the cold south Atlantic at Cabo da Boa Esperanza - the Cape of Good Hope. Over the next couple of weeks we'll share journals extracts from that epic Landy adventure with The Bugle readers. We pick up the story in Kingsley's words
"I've dreamt about this one for years, a journey around the outside edge of Africa, 33 countries, clockwise around the continent, Land Rovers and rubber ducks. What an Adventure! The Namib and the Sahara, the mouth of the Cunene, Congo, Niger, Nile and Zambezi. The voodoo of Togo and Benin, jungles and tropical islands not to mention the dangers of the Horn of Africa, as we continue to use adventure to improve and save lives.
Our objective is clear, our spirits are up, as in the pouring rain, in a massive act of solidarity in the fight against malaria, 347 Land Rovers of every shape and vintage escort us out from the Mother City.
With us we carry a Scroll of Peace & Goodwill in support of malaria prevention endorsed by hundreds of well wishers and Nobel Peace prize laureates, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Just three Landies, our kit, a calabash of seawater and a crazy sense of optimism that had us following the outline of Mama Afrika. With Table Mountain behind us, Robin Island to the west and to the north the great unknown. It is the beginning of an incredible adventure that soon takes us across the Orange River and into the Sperrgebiet, Namibia's forbidden coast, dotted with old German diamond mining settlements. Will keep you posted!"
