Salt Rock matriculant Joshua Bean achieved eight distinctions when the IEB National Senior Certificate examinations were released this week and was in the top one percent in the country for three subjects.

A pupil from Kearsney College, he and parents Andy and Cathy were absolutely delighted with the results which he hopes will get him accepted to study business science at UCT this year.  Josh was a prefect, deputy head of the prestigious Kearsney College choir and member of the school's 1st golf team.

His distinctions were for Accounting 97%; English 82%; History 84%; Life Orientation 89%; Maths 96%; Maths Paper 3 99%; Physical Sciences 94%; and AP Maths 92%.  He was in the top percentile in the country for Accounting, Maths Paper 3 and Physical Science.

Kearsney achieved another set of extraordinary marks to emerge the top independent boys' school in South Africa for the second successive year.

A quarter of the 129 Kearsney boys who wrote achieved four or more distinctions - with an impressive 299 distinctions between them (an average of 2.3 each).  The school has six boys in SA's top 136 candidates.

Kearsney's reputation for Maths and Science excellence was enhanced with a remarkable 44% of those who wrote Mathematics obtaining distinctions, 25% attained distinctions in Advanced Programme Mathematics and 42% in Physical Sciences.  Sixty-three percent of students in Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) achieved a distinction and 50% in Music.

Headmaster Elwyn van den Aardweg said he was delighted that "the excellence we collectively strive for extends to all the subjects that we offer, with wonderful achievements being recorded across the board.

"Academics are Kearsney's number one priority and Kearsney boys are immersed in an academically rigorous environment from day one.  This environment of academic striving in a disciplined environment, together with our highly qualified, professional and dedicated teachers, empowers the boys to reach their potential.  We acknowledge the important role which so many play in making this possible."

He said Kearsney was proud to be an inclusive school, where boys with different academic abilities were welcomed.

"These results bear testimony to the incredible results that our leading Inclusion Programme achieves with boys who require various levels of academic support and assistance.  Kearsney is also proud to provide financial assistance and bursaries to many families from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the opportunity to receive a top education.  The boys are carefully mentored and often achieve outstanding academic results, opening the doors to bright futures."
