The 1960s are back in décor fashion
The key to this design trend though is to incorporate the 60s swing with a modern flare. Look for furniture that has the feel of the decade as opposed to actually having been made 50 years ago. It’s all about being inspired by the past rather than reliving it.
Muted palette with shocks of neon.
The general colour palette of the 1960s was inspired by nature but turned up to the brightest levels. Loud green, bright fuchsia and vibrant orange were some of the most popular colours during the decade. These bright colours were then all used together in one room or outfit.
In order to bring this into a modern setting, start with a more neutral palette of olive, brown or muted sunset colours. The next step is to add in pops of the more vibrant versions of these colours. This combination will invoke the 60s without overwhelming the senses.
Fringe and faux fur.
The 1960s was a very tactile era. You could find fake fur and fringe on almost everything – from clothing to lounge suites. They were also dyed the brightest colours possible and combined to give off an overly luxurious feel.
The modern way to add fringe and fur to a room is to use it sparingly. You can also use muted rather than colours in order to ensure that they don’t overwhelm your décor. Try a table cloth with fringe on the edges. Another fun idea is to have alternating throw cushions – one with fake fur and the next plain.
Large patterns.
The 1960s era is well known for being psychedelic. Home décor included lots of patterns that were multi-coloured and often dizzying to look at. This can be made to work in modern homes if you use the patterns in very small doses.
Another way to modernise this idea, is to try using large patterns across your floor or on one feature wall. Big circular patterns are great for invoking the look and feel of classic 1960s design. However, you can really use any style of pattern with plenty of colour as long as it’s oversized and doesn’t overwhelm.
