Challah: Bread as Life

Challah: Bread as Life

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2025-11-26

There is a reason every culture on earth has a bread that anchors its people. Bread is the first comfort, the daily nourishment, the quiet proof that ordinary ingredients can become something sacred in our hands. Challah carries that spirit. It is the Sabbath loaf of the Jewish table, but its message belongs to everyone: life is meant to be shared, braided together, piece by piece.

Challah is a reminder that baking is not old-fashioned. It is an act of courage in a rushed world. It is slowing down long enough to let something rise. It is offering warmth to family, friends, neighbours, and even strangers. A loaf on a table changes the atmosphere of a home. Bread feeds the body, but it also softens the world.

Challah

Ingredients:

4 cups bread flour

2 tsp fine salt

1/4 cup sugar

1 packet (10 g) instant yeast

1 cup warm water

2 large eggs

100 gr soft butter

1 extra egg for brushing

Optional: sesame seeds or poppy seeds

Method

1. Combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl.

2. Mix warm water, eggs, and oil in a jug.

3. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.

4. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

5. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled.

6. Punch down and divide the dough into three equal pieces. Roll each into a long rope.

7. Braid gently, tucking the ends underneath.

8. Transfer to a lined tray. Cover and let rise again until puffy.

9. Heat oven to 180C. Brush the loaf with beaten egg. Add seeds if you wish.

10. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding on the base.

11. Cool before slicing, if you can resist tearing into it warm.

Challah is not just bread. It is invitation, memory, generosity, and the quiet beauty of feeding others. Through your hands, flour and water become life. Oh and if you want to make it super special set a gentle intention/prayer while kneading, by that small gesture you will create a sacred nourishment, not just an ordinary Challah.
