Something Old, Something New!
Something Old, Something New!
The two sections of the programme presented by the Durban Chamber Choir will contain a cappella music by composers featured in their two concert programmes from 2015: William Byrd, Josquin des Prez, Orlandus Lassus, Camille Saint-Sa´ns and Charles Villiers Stanford.
Each composer will be represented by some music already included in those programmes and some music which will be new both to the choir and to the audience, says Cockburn. This is an opportunity either to be introduced to or to become more familiar with some unusual and beautiful examples of music from 16th- and 19th-century England and France.
The styles and moods are very varied. The Renaissance pieces include the ethereal polyphony of Josquin‚ Ave Maria and the intense chromatic harmony of The Persian Sybill by Lassus. The Romantic pieces range from Saint-Sa´ns‚ slow-moving Calm of Night to Stanford‚ Quick! We have but a second, which as its title suggests is over almost as soon as it has begun!
Conducted by Ronel Perks and accompanied by Kim Siedle, the items to be performed by Durban Girls College senior choir embrace a wide range of popular vocal genres. Included in their selection are: well-known South African songs such as the famous Click Song and Asinbo Nanga Mandela; Don McLean‚ American Pie; the Pablo Casals classic, Nigra Sum; the spiritual, Wade in the Water; Jerry Walker‚ evergreen Mister Beau Jangles; Carl Jenkins‚ Two Hai Kus; All the April Evening by Hugh Robertson; and a medley of three Beatles classics.
The whole programme ends with Sing Joyfully by William Byrd, a glorious setting for six voice parts in which the Durban Chamber Choir will be joined by sopranos and altos from Durban Girls College.
An event not to be missed, tickets for Something Old, Something New at R50 (adults) and R30 (pensioners and scholars) will be available at the door. Public entrance to DGC is at 586 Musgrave Road, and all are welcome.
