Grill Jichana, Durban's Most Iconic Dining Destination

Grill Jichana, Durban's Most Iconic Dining Destination

Durban born, Executive Sous Chef of the Grill Jichana at the Elangeni Hotel, Prenolan Naidoo is a real gem and a local treasure. He manages one of the hottest steakhouses in Durban. He is suave, sophisticated and has a real flare for flavour combinations. Chef Prenolan's secret is real simplelocally sourced, seasonal produce, unpretentious and authentic!

He has been at the helm of this popular steakhouse venue for four years under the guidance and mentorship of the Elangeni and Maharani Hotel executive chef and culinary genius Shaun Munro.

At Grill Jichana, Chef Prenolan runs a smooth operation. His team members are highly trained and are able to explicate the menu with panache and steer you toward the best South African red to accompany that Angus rib eye steak.

Whether it's Asian inspired locally farmed organic duck, moist and succulent, served with tenderly spiced stir-fried noodles, or a melt in the mouth lamb shank, interlaced with creamy mash and silky jus, or a cut of dry aged portion of beef, each dish at Grill Jichana is nothing short of miraculous.

Needless to say, chef Prenolan has won the hearts of almost every diner, with a menu offering brightly flavoured versions of South Africa's best-loved food. Keeping locals happy with contemporary yet traditional flavours.

Speaking to chef Prenolan last Friday night, he was bursting with excitement, his restaurant was full and each customer beamed with euphoria, "We want our customers to enjoy our hospitality but not appear too formal." Chef Prenolan tells me.

"We cater for everybody and we are always happy to provide for special meals. Our fish and meat is always fresh and we do not believe in freezing our meat. We play our part in sustainable food and produce and source our ingredients in an ethically responsible manner."

It's the small things that make a big impression, and chef Prenolan surprised us with a mouth watering vegetable platter. Which was big enough to feed our table of four. Each item on the platter was delicious and for our main course Chef Prenolan hit another sweet spot with creamy, melt in your mouth goat's cheese and walnut gnocchi, which was not on the menu but I am sure can be ordered in advance.

We loved our down-to-earth server, Khulasande who provided personal recommendations and paced our meal perfectly.

The interior at Grill Jichana is stunning with an exposed kitchen and an expansive glassed wine cooler. Subtle, dark tones with augmented lighting and a hushed atmosphere, makes this prime date territory perfect for that Valentine's Day romantic dinner.
