2018 WSL South America Pro Junior Championship

2018 WSL South America Pro Junior Championship

Date: 2018-10-05

Lobitos, Peru and Samuel Pupo (BRA) has added a prestigious achievement to his career by becoming the 2018 WSL South America Pro Junior Champion. In a high-scoring affair, Pupo defeated Jhonny Guerrero (PER) in the Final of the O'Neill Pro Junior presented by Petroperu to earn his maiden WSL Title.

The perfect lefthanders in Lobitos provided ample opportunity for the athletes, who were able to earn rides in the excellent range all weekend long. However, Pupo's combination of rail-to-rail surfing mixed in with a nifty aerial game put him head and shoulders above his competitors.

In his first heat on Sunday, Sammy destroyed a long left to earn an almost perfect ride of a 9.80 (out of a possible 10 points). He later added an 8.25 for the highest heat total of the event with an 18.05. Pupo then obtained an 8.75 in his Quarterfinal battle against fellow Brazilian Lucas Vicente and followed by opening up his Semifinal with a 9.50 on his first wave.

Meanwhile a little closer to home at Seal Point, Cape St Francis, breezy onshore conditions and a slight surge in swell greeted competitors on the final day of competition at the Billabong Junior Series Finale, and the first heat of the day - the U12 Girls Final - was sent straight out into the Seal Point lineup..

Gabi Herbst was the surfer of the morning with a few incredible rides in the mixed up conditions, including an excellent 8.0 out of 10 for one ride, which secured the title. Sarah Scott was the runner up.

Kai Hall was the champion in the U12 Boys final, closely followed by Joel Fowles who surfed impressively on his backhand.

The U14 Girls division was a slow heat, with Aimee Du Preez who emerged as the winner, and Olivia Winter in second place.

Luke Thompson caught 11 waves in his Final heat to defeat James Ribbink in what was an exciting U14 Boys heat.

Then Max Elkington and Luke Slijpen took to the water to battle it out for event honours in the WSL Junior Men's event. It was all about Elkington who took the win and broke his year-long victory drought with his first place.
