Where else are you greeted at the door with a complimentary glass of Sherry? At The Jichana Grill the beautiful Thandeka welcomes you at the door with a tray and escorts you to your table. Then almost as soon as you've settled in your seat, those Moss bolletjies with the sweet and tangy Chakalaka sauce arrive and you have no option but to indulge.
The Grill Jichana is a New York Style Steakhouse situated on the beachfront in Durban at the Elangeni Hotel. It is the perfect place for anyone with a passion for high quality steaks and monstrous pieces of good quality meat, cooked in true char-grilled South African fashion.
Using exclusively certified Angus beef, all ingredients are brought in fresh everyday and served in a contemporary metropolitan setting. There is a relaxing ambience here, the lights are low, the music is soft and not intrusive and the staff friendly and discreet and very professional.
Their biggest seller on the menu is the 600g T-bone steak, which has been superbly cut and hung by their preferred butcher in Botha's Hill. The meat is then basted in the traditional South African style, only the best quality is used here explains Sous Chef, Prenolan Naidoo.
"We use the best meat cuts, beef prime rib, Angus Ribeye rump and Wagu beef whenever we can get it." Explains Prenolan. "We use the traditional way of preparing our meat, the way my father used to do."
The menu is extensive and it will make any meat lover drool at the selection they have on offer, like the 500g Rump and prime rib on the bone, fit for a king. There is also the Lamb Chops Duo, which we are told is the all time favourite of Tsogo Sun CEO, who without fail makes a turn at The Grill Jichana to get his fix whenever he is in town.
There are special touches to this dining venue. In the three years since it has opened it has evolved into a trendy meeting place. Where family and friends can come together and enjoy superior quality meal accompanied by award winning wines.
Even though The Grill Jichana is dedicated steakhouse it also caters for non-meat eaters. There is a simply superb Prawn Gratin, spiced plump prawns that are served in a garlic cream sauce with a hint of chilli. There is also my favourite the Halumi StackSimply YUM!
But to be honest what brought me to The Grill Jichana is their very impressive Wine Menu. Tsogo Sun was the biggest buyer for the second consecutive year at the wine auctions, with total purchases of more than R2mil. For us it was all the motivation we needed to check out their wine cellar.
Oh and we were impressed. A wonderful feature is that many of their wines are available by the glass and are very well priced and from April, The Grill Jichanawill be offering their patrons the rare opportunity to experience South African top auction wines, paired with a 3-course dinner.
At The Grill Jichana you can really taste the quality. Their portions are simply huge and offer exceptional value. All ingredients are guaranteed fresh every day. All steaks have a delicious combination charred exteriors with succulent pink meat once you cut into the steak, served with your choice of sauce and side dishes.
