KZN Philharmonic

KZN Philharmonic

Date: 2014-04-25
KZN Philharmonic hits the high wire eTthekwini is in for a thrilling spectacle of sound and high flying artistry when the KZN Philharmonic presents Cirque de la Symphonie. It will be staged on Saturday 14 June at the Playhouse Opera Theatre.

Imagine Durban's outstanding KZN Philharmonic Orchestra - with seventy live musicians on stage - performing classical favourites, whilst overhead the world's leading circus artists precisely execute daring aerial artistry without a safety net.

The rich sounds of the orchestra combined with the magical cirque acrobatics will definitely take your breath away. Under the baton of conductor Theodore Kuchar the show will also be presented in Johannesburg at the Joburg Theatre between 27 and 29 June.

Last year Cirque de la Symphonie took place at the Teatro Montecasino and all four performances were completely sold out. Audience comments included "brilliant, outstanding, wow that was amazing". The show, which offers a unique performance concept, is sweeping the world, bringing new audiences to the symphony orchestra and the great composers whilst showcasing the brilliance of award-winning international cirque artists. In the words of co-founder Alexander Streltsov: "We have to balance a full circus programme in the limited stage space shared with the orchestra, usually three metres downstage from the conductor's podium with rigging for aerialists, special lighting needs and other technical innovations not normally associated with a symphony concert. Our show is not about smoke and lights.

It's about artistry and excellent music and this has proved to be a phenomenal fusion." The programme includes favourites from Bizet's Carmen, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, Dvorak, Bernstein, Shostakovich and many more whilst the audience is bedazzled by aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers and strongmen. Mr Bongani Tembe, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the KZN Philharmonic says, "In our ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation we are delighted to present Cirque de la Symphonie in Durban and Johannesburg, ensuring that a wide range of South Africa's diverse audiences has the opportunity to experience the exceptional."
