Khulani Children's Shelter

Khulani Children's Shelter

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2015-07-17
Prudence Mwandla is one busy lady, she runs the Khulani Children's Shelter in Durban North with stern purpose and unyielding determination, to continue helping the children who are abused and abandoned.

Her mission started in 2000, with just two children, abused and abandoned by their parents they found their way to Prudence's house and through social services she was able to help them get back on their feet and move on to a better life.

Since then Prudence has housed hundreds of orphans and abandoned children. And as she came to understand the needs of a Shelter she started working with various NGO's to assist her with her plight. Through generous funding from Lotto she was able to improve the condition of her shelter.

"The aim of the project is to provide opportunities for unemployed people to work in the garden." Said Prudence, "Our objective it to provide a facility for skills training and practical exercise and to increase the earning potential of the people involved in the project."

Helping her with her projects is sister Ivy Zulu from Richard's Bay. Ivy is in charge of the group of ladies that do bead work craft at the shelter. Displaying their goods in a craft studio, built with the Lotto donation, however they now need an outlet that will buy their goods and distribute them to the market place.

"We are hoping that the establishment of an organic garden will help to improve the health of the people through good nutrition." Said Prudence, "It will also help to revive traditional skills by exposing young people to the culture of the older members of community. We hope it will help to provide future food security in a sustainable way, and help to heal fragmented communities."

Prudence is looking for support from the local community. She is looking for an outlet to sell her beaded artwork and her fresh organic vegetable to a distributor to raise funds to upgrade her shelter for homeless children. If you can help please contact Prudence on 084 822 1682.
