In Times of Need
So often it is the most vulnerable who experience acute hardship when extreme weather strikes. When the cataclysmic thunderstorm hit the township areas of North Durban, unleashing devastating flooding in areas close to the riverine areas, many flimsy homes stood little chance. Some seventy bewildered families who lost their homes and virtually all their worldly possessions in the deadly onrush of the deluge have found a temporary haven in the Town Hall in Amaoti.
The Domino Foundation's Feeding programme, which has worked in the area for a number of years, supplying high protein sandwiches and soups to several thousand school children in the area on a daily basis, was alerted to the disaster. The programme dispatched relief buckets, bottled water, cases of chicken and eggs, powdered milk as well as clothing to the beleaguered families. Cathy Whittle, leader of the programme, commented, "The Gospel's call to feed the hungry and clothe the naked is very close to our hearts. We have to respond when a crisis like this strikes those who have no other help."
Counsellor Bongani Qhantsi of Ward 53 expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Amaoti community saying that he hoped that The Domino Foundation would continue extending a helping hand to the needy.
