Umhlanga Winter Trail Run Offers a Breath of Fresh Air

Umhlanga Winter Trail Run Offers a Breath of Fresh Air

Date: 2017-07-07

Four hundred and four trail enthusiasts gathered at 6.30am for the start of the Umhlanga Tourism / Talisman Hire Winter Trail Run & Walk on 2 July 2017. Sibaya Casino was the location for this, the 21st running, of the Umhlanga Trail series, and provided entrants with an interesting, enjoyable new route.

Because of all the building going on in central Umhlanga the decision was taken to move the trail to the casino which is surrounded by sugar cane. During the week leading up to the event Riverside Trails charted the well-received 6km, 12km and 18km routes. Women's winner of the 18km race, Lisa Collett, said it was the best trail run she had ever done. Lisa is a Comrades Marathon runner and added, "After Comrades I do trail running for four or five months because it's nice to get away from roads." Get away tarred roads the runners and walkers did. Twelve kilometre race entrant, Roxanne Daniels, said "There was gravel, soft sand - a good workout for the calves - some hard sand, mud, a few steep hills at the top of which we saw lovely views, and a small section of forest."

Runners of all ages enjoyed the three races, and several were part of family groups, from grandparents to grandchildren and others in between. Bryce Hoppe ran with his mom, Lynda Hoppe, and both came third in their respective race categories - the men's 6km and the ladies' 18km. Chairman of Umhlanga Tourism Peter Rose said, "I'm very pleased that the change of venue was good for the runners."

The Harley Motorcycle Adventure Tours riders, race marshals, ROAG officials and other volunteers all guided the runners, attended to their safety and helped make the July 2017 Umhlanga Tourism / Talisman Hire Winter Trail Run & Walk a great success.

Sponsors for the event included: Talisman Hire, Powerade and Coca-Cola. Sibaya and the Sharks' Board donated prizes.

Winners from first to third place: 6km ladies - Grace Daley, Bronwyn Marais and Ilse de Villiers; 6km men - Hlomayi Machea, Corbyn Marais and Bryce Hoppe; 12km ladies - Keren Worlock, Kristen Williams and Catherine Robson; 12km men - Zothile Moto, Arnold Cele and Brent Yelland; 18km ladies - Lisa Collett, Lara Coulthard and Lynda Hoppe; 18km men - Anele Dlamini, Professor Mollen and Prince Abel Chiposiwa. Congratulations everyone.
