Durban's First Natural Botanical Perfumery

Durban's First Natural Botanical Perfumery

Author: Kerry Nel
Date: 2022-01-26

After the past two years, our collective appreciation for the natural world seems more palpable than ever before. We are looking for more ways to connect with nature as well as authentic experiences. Even if you don't have a natural affinity for the great outdoors, you might now be making more mindful considerations regarding the environment and the things you choose to consume. Often scent can help us make choices. The smell of freshly baked sourdough from your local artisanal bakery, over the smell of fast food. The salty ocean air that entices a swim after an indoor workout, over a dip in a chlorinated swimming pool. If you happen to have lost your sense of smell over the past two years, you'll appreciate the scents of daily life even more so.

Where better to explore the union between nature's scents, daily living and art, than Durban's first natural botanical perfumery, Myrrh and Moksha. The perfumery concept store opened in December after two and a half years operating from a home laboratory and trading online at local artisan markets. A visit to the perfumery is a personal scent experience. You'll get the opportunity to smell, test and shop solid perfumes, eau de parfum sprays, fragrance oils and a range of natural home fragrance products. The perfumer herself will guide you through the fragrances and answer your questions. You'll also get a glimpse into the on site production lab.

Myrrh and Moksha doubles up as a showroom for start-up kitchen designer, Mess Kitchens. This clever collaboration was born when creatives Kerry Snel and Kevin Boyd realised Mess Kitchen's minimalist lab style approach to kitchen design and the products being created in the Myrrh and Moksha lab could live well together.

The perfumery, located on Durban's Florida road, opposite Ike's Books, above the Glenwood bagel shop, the new Flamme Rouge cafe and Fresh Flowers, will also offer scent workshops this year. The workshops will be focused around scent awareness, the subjective nature of scent experiences and how we can explore ourselves on a deeper level through fragrance. You'll walk away with a small perfume creation of your own and a new perspective on the world around you.
