Through my eyes

Through my eyes

Friends and relatives mourned the victims of a bomb blast that tore through a public park in the eastern Pakistani city yesterday. The park was crowded with families celebrating the Easter holiday, and the explosion left at least 70 people dead and more than 300 wounded. A faction of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, and Pakistani government officials have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

My heart aches for all the people affected by this attack. I just cannot understand how one man could kill another man because their faiths are different. How could our religious preferences set us apart so much that it invokes such hatred in so many?

It has been noted that "religious" conflicts are not based on religious beliefs exclusively and instead should be seen as clashes of communities, identities, and interests that are secular-religious or at least very much secular.

Some have asserted that attacks are carried out by those with very strong religious convictions such as terrorists in the context of global religious war.

Robert Pape, a political scientist who specializes in suicide terrorism argues that much of the modern Muslim suicide terrorism is secular based. Although the causes of terrorism are complex, it may be that terrorists are partially reassured by their religious views that God is on their side and will reward them in heaven for punishing unbelievers.

These conflicts are among the most difficult to resolve, particularly where both sides believe that God is on their side and has endorsed the moral righteousness of their claims. One of the most infamous quotes associated with religious fanaticism was made in 1209 during the siege of BÄziers, a Crusader asked the Papal Legate Arnaud Amalric how to tell Catholics from "Cathars" when the city was taken, to which Amalric replied: "Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius," or "Kill them all; God will recognize his."

For thousands of years we have been fighting an invisible battle in the name of God. What is that all about?

In our home we celebrate Easter. We invite friends and family and we celebrate something special. We seldom think about the real meaning of our union but just by getting together we have an excuse to be together at one table sharing a feast of traditional goodies.

At no point are we celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I often wonder what the beautiful eggs, lambs and bunnies signify besides making such a beautiful table decoration. I mean I have looked up the meaning but I am still confused about how it equates to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

There is so much to celebrate in our mutual diversities. We really just need to recognize the essence of each being and allow each person the freedom to be. Just Be!

I honestly believe that what humanity needs right now is a revolution of the soul. The time is here to revolt our consciousness. Lets say "No" to Bigotry, "No" to Prejudice, "No" to Racism and "No" to Intolerance and lets start within our own hearts first.
