Look AT Them Nippers

Look AT Them Nippers

Author: Sarah Baillie

Ballito Surf Lifesaving Club was recently restarted by Quentin Power, leader of the Specialised Rescue Unit, which operates out of Ballito and has saved numerous lives already. Quentin identified that there was a need to teach the Ballito children about being safe in the sea and give them a place where they would learn how to become a lifesaver and take part in competitions if they would like to. I joined him last year to help out with the coaching of the Nippers. I have my SA colours for Lifesaving and captained the Commonwealth Lifesaving Team that participated in the Commonwealth Lifesaving Champs in 2009 in Canada.

This season we had a small group of Nippers and Juniors who worked really hard and have passed their awards. Janke Spangenberg, Roan Marais and Ryan Aranky passed their Level 1 Nipper awards, while Zo' Frank and Dudley MacArthur passed their Level 2 Nipper Awards. Daniel Boyd, Angus Read and Kodi Findlay all passed their Level 3 Nipper awards and Joshua Boyd passed his Junior Lifeguard Award. Kieran Taylor, David Brown and Christine Cooper passed their Lifeguard Awards. Congratulations and well done on a fine achievement.

The club has started to attract a lot of new Nippers, Niplets (children aged 6 and 7) and Juniors who are keen to start lifesaving. Ballito Surf Lifesavers are looking for sponsorship to help the club to buy much needed equipment. We need 12 Malibu boards, which could be branded and a whole list of items.

The Nippers have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with, in their first competition they really showed that they have potential and if we could get some sponsors to help upgrade our equipment that would really give our club and the children a boost at training and the club will only get stronger. Any contribution will be welcomed by the club and be greatly appreciated by the children. Please contact me on 073 262 3897 and help us save lives.
