Playa de Pantin, Valdovi–o, Galiciaand Matthew McGillivrayfrom Jeffreys Bay, South Africa secured his best ever result on the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) to date, after finishing in equal 5th place at theQS10,000 ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro at Playa de Pantin.

Stop No. 9 on the 2019 WSL European QS tour, the ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro, has juggled with a tricky forecast and witnessed impressive performances from some of the world's best surfers.

"I'm really happy with the event, it's my best result so far. The first two QS 10,000 events this year weren't great for me so these points are a huge help," said McGillivray.

With this result, McGillivray banked 5,200 points, which saw him move up to 23rd on the QS rankings.

Miguel Pupo (BRA) took out the title in the Final in Pantin against Jake Marshall (USA).

Back to South Africans and Bianca Buitendag was the standout performer for the Mercedes-Benz Buffalo City South African Surfing team on Day 3 of the ISA World Surfing Games (WSG) presented by Vans in Miyazaki, Japan.

The 25-year-old former Championship Tour (CT) surfer from Victoria Bay in the Southern Cape advanced through two hard-fought heats in overhead waves on Monday to reach the Main Event Final.

As the highest placed women surfer from the African Continent, Buitendag has also secured provisional qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where surfing will make its debut on the Olympic stage in July next year.
