Welcome to our new feature on Electric Vehicles, which will highlight the news and developments of the EV world with its amazing technological advancements and breakthroughs.

The most exciting event recently was the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship that took place on Saturday 25th of February in Cape Town. Our very own E-Prix event, where Jaguar TCS Racing took the opportunity to build on their standings with several podium finishes already under the belt. Both Jaguar-powered Envision Racing cars finished in the top five positions.

The Watt Electric Vehicle Company has pioneered a unique lightweight foundation for next generation electric light commercial vehicles. They plan on a facility that will produce five thousand units a year of their highly flexible 3.5-tonne cab and chassis unit, called WATT eCV1. From this platform they can make a range of body configurations to suit any fleet requirements.

The electric vehicle is here to stay. A company called VDL Nedcar , which produces the L7e class of light electric vehicles believes that XBUS and Evetta models have great potential for future motoring solutions.

Charging is a primary concern for EV?s and there has been a significant amount of investment in this issue. As reported by MasterDrive, various solutions are here or coming:

? Audi is installing 70 ultra-fast public charging stations that will fully charge a car in less than an hour at 33 different sites on the route between Johannesburg and Cape Town and at public recreational areas.

? Jaguar is installing 82 charging points in major hubs and along popular holiday routes.

? BMW has 230 charging points.

? ZimiCharge has an app to find charging points along routes. They also plan to install 10 000 charging points with at least 1 000 of these to be available within the next three years

? Mordor Intelligence says significant investment is expected in EV power capacity over the next decade in Africa.
