KZN Sharks Board Schools Marine Week 18 - 20 October

KZN Sharks Board Schools Marine Week 18 - 20 October

Date: 2016-10-21
Join the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board together with various stakeholders such as the Durban Natural Science Museum, uShaka Marine World, South African Weather Service, Umgeni Water, Durban Solid waste, SA Navy and more, on the opening day of the three-day KZN Sharks Board Marine Week event which will be taking place at the KZNSB Heard Quarters from the 18thth to the 20nd of October 2016.

The oceans cover over 70% of the planet, they generate most of the oxygen that people and other animals breathe, they regulate the climate, they clean the water that we drink, global trade is dominated by sea transport, there is so much that the oceans give to human life, they are worth celebrating and they deserve to be taken care of.

The KZNSB has dedicated three days of this special month (Marine Month) to celebrate the beauty and the value of our oceans with learners from all around South Africa. Amongst the schools which will be attending this event will be schools from Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the oceans, their importance in human life, and how humans can contribute in taking care of them. This event will also be used as a platform to give advice to learners on different careers in the marine field. The more young people become aware and involved in the marine related careers, the more the oceans will be taken care of.

The opening of the event will start with a brief formal program in our Hall which will be followed by our audio-visual presentation and it will conclude with our educational shark dissection show where learners will learn more about sharks, and get an opportunity to touch and feel different organs of the shark. This is an exciting part of the programme and provides great learning experience for learners.

There will be over 23 organisations who will be exhibiting during the event and providing valuable information on the various career paths available on their perspective fields. Amongst the organisations who will be exhibiting will be Eskom, Water and Sanitation, Coastal Storm Water, Natural Resources Division, Ethekwini Transport Authority, Wildlife Environmental Society of South African, the South African Police Service, KZN Science Centre and the Department of Agriculture. The learners will get an opportunity to interact with the exhibitors after the shark dissection show.
