KwaZulu Natal celebrates 20 years of democracy

KwaZulu Natal celebrates 20 years of democracy

Date: 2014-03-07
KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu notes the past 20 years in democracy as a milestone that is worth celebrating as government since 1994 has done a lot to improve lives of people in South Africa.

'The year 2014 is a cause for pride and celebration for South Africans as a lot has changed to the better since 1994', he says.

'For us, 20 years in democracy is a success story because a lot has changed and government has worked well to improve lives in South Africa, however, the story of 20 years cannot be told without the indelible footprints left by our struggle heroes whose blood was shed to liberate our country. The 20 year milestone must be celebrated with them in mind and the work that has been done by government since 1994.'

Mthembu was speaking at the provincial prayer held in the presence of the Provincial Legislature and various religious formations from the province of KwaZulu Natal.

The prayer comes 20 years after the unseating of the oppressive government in South Africa, marking two decades of democracy.

The 20 year milestone is an achievement for the province as KwaZulu Natal Premier, Senzo Mchunu also maintains that the provincial government has worked well to advance people's lives in the past five years.

Since 2009, KwaZulu Natal has transformed the province and progress has been made towards a better life for all, he said.

Mchunu who spoke at length about the achievements of the province in the last five years said, the majority of people before 1994 where living without provision of basic services.

'Before 1994, ordinary people had no running water, no electricity as the government of that time did not pay attention to concerns of the majority. Policies which governed the country before; were irregular; they gave special attention to the minority and ignored people in many parts of the province. A lot has been done to reverse the legacies of apartheid post 1994. A lot has been done to ensure that people receive equal access to service delivery that was not provided by the previous government,' said Mchunu.
