Spectacular Maiden QS Victory For J-Bay's Staples

Spectacular Maiden QS Victory For J-Bay's Staples

Date: 2018-04-20

In a battle of the J-Bay locals, Dale Staples won his first ever World Surfing League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) event in spectacular style against Matthew McGillivray.

Staples opened his account in the QS1000 rated Mitchum Buffalo City Surf Pro, presented by Reef Wetsuits men's final with a quick 8.75, followed by a 7.00 to force fellow Jeffreys Bay local, Matthew McGillivray into an early combo situation from which he was unable to recover.

Staples oozed humility and praise for McGillivray saying, "I just want to congratulate Matt. He has been cooking throughout the contest and surfing well in all of the QS's and I am rooting for him for a big finish at the end of the year and hope to see him on the World Tour."

The junior men's QS1000 event was won by Durban's Luke Thompson who managed a 12.10 to get the better of local East London local, Thomas Lindhurst on 11.50.

The men's longboarding invitational was dominated by the Eastern Cape onslaught. The event was won by St. Francis' Michael Hill and runner-up was Steven Sawyer from Jeffferys Bay. Ryan Lightfoot, also from Jeffreys Bay finished third and in fourth was the only Durbanite, Brad Weave.

All the QS titles at this past weekend's Mitchum Buffalo City Surf Pro, presented by Reef Wetsuits were won by surfers from Durban and Jeffreys Bay.
