Engen Volkswagen Cup at Zwartkops

Engen Volkswagen Cup at Zwartkops

Date: 2012-09-19
Competition in the Engen Volkswagen Cup at Zwartkops Raceway was its usual picture of frenetic activity at the last meeting. Two races of 10 laps each saw the competitors in this single-make series fighting for every inch of track position they could get during the WesBank Super Series event.

With 33 Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars on the starting grid, it made the race track a very crowded place. Just a single lap into race one the Safety Car was deployed, bunching the field together for two laps.

That deployment was so that the after-effects of an incident with Graham Press (M8) and Leon Odendaal (M15 - BTR Construction / Elegant Fuel) could be cleared from the track.

When the Safety Car returned to the pits, it was the defending champion, Devin Robertson (1 - Big Boss Auto / Sparco), who made the most of the re-start to create a gap to the field.

Robyn did very well in the first race to finish just outside of the top five in each of the races, claiming sixth in race one and seventh in the second event.

With Robertson the big winner for the day, claiming first overall, it was the fifth place finish of Rodrigues (who was awarded the title of Driver of the Day) that pushed him to the lead in the Masters category, allowing him to claim first place ahead of Dean Ball (M5 - Champion Motors) and Etienne Prinsloo (M11 - Tile Mecca). Rodrigues was the highest-finishing Masters competitor in each of the races giving him a clear run to the victory.

Engen Volkswagen Cup action moves to Killarney for the penultimate round of the WesBank Super Series on Saturday, 22 September.
