Popular Durban singer gets pleasant surprise on air

Popular Durban singer gets pleasant surprise on air

Date: 2020-01-31

Not many people can say they were duped and walked away feeling like a million bucks.

But this was literally the plight of local singer, Glo Mapenzi, during a live performance of his hit single "Signs" on the East Coast Radio Top 40 on Saturday.

"When I got to the studio all I knew was that they wanted me to do a live performance because my song was doing well and had got to the 20s on the Top 40," said Glo.

"So, I prepped and got to the studio with members of our Black City Records team. When we got there, we found that ECR had laid out a spread of eats and drinks to celebrate my success. However, we were then informed by the programme manager, Jackie Deeble and Top 40 DJs, Danny Guselli and Tee Xaba that my song had dropped out of the Top 40 and this was actually a way of saying 'well done and goodbye'. I was devastated but put on a brave face because I still had to perform the song live on air."

"We then proceeded to the studio for the interview and both Danny and Tee were still very sympathetic that my song had dropped out of the charts. We chatted for a short while and then something totally unexpected happened. Danny looked at me with a naughty smile and said something that sounded like my song "Signs" was No 6 on the charts this week.

"I thought, was hearing right. Did l just hear him say 6 I looked around totally confused. But then Tee burst into laughter and gave me the thumbs up, "Yes Glo No 6!". I was so overcome with emotion that I burst into tears. It was a truly special moment."

Glo then went on to perform the single live, which was quite special because it was the first time that any artist had performed a hit single live in its actual chart position on the ECR Top 40.

Black City Records director and "Signs" songwriter, Yogan Naidoo said they had been contacted by ECR programme manager, Jackie Deeble who had told them that Signs had entered the Top 10.

"He said we want to give Glo a big surprise and swore us to secrecy. We all went along, got the champagne and didn't say a word to Glo - which was a real hard thing to do. So, we kept things under wraps and couldn't wait for the moment to pop the champagne. We all are very chuffed," he said.

Yogan said it was even more worthwhile considering Glo's rags to fame story.

People can listen to "Signs" on all Itunes, Deezer, Spotify, Google Play and most other online music platforms.
