An afternoon of Dainties and Dames

An afternoon of Dainties and Dames

Date: 2013-01-31
The Afrisun KZN Community Development Trust continues to do fantastic work in the upliftment of communities by contributing R90 000 to run a "Dainties for Dames' programme, in both schools and community groups, for young girls hitting puberty, who face the challenge of a monthly menstrual cycle without sanitary pads and often without underwear.

The primary aim of the Trust is to utilize its income for the benefit, welfare, maintenance, improvement and development of any community or person within the province of KwaZulu-Natal with particular interest in the north coast and surrounding areas.

Sue Barnes (founder of Subz Brooks) is a mom, who for many years collected underwear and sanitary pads for young girls in the Amaoti area, to restore their dignity. She came to the realization that the task of collecting sanitary pads and purchasing underwear was not sustainable so she designed what is now an SABS, Gynae and Dr. approved washable sanitary pad - which is accompanied by underwear. The washable sanitary pad easily snaps very securely on to the underwear.

The Trust has partnered with Subz Brooks, Abigail Crawford (from Ukakhanya Development Trust) and Kristy Glass (the founder of LOTS - Life Orientation through Sport in townships across KwaMashu, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg) to assist with the facilitation of the programme.

Yesterday (23 January 2013), marked the first KwaMashu community group handover where approximately 30 girls were introduced to the product, together with helpful information about their bodies through a closely-knit facilitated session. Each pack consisted of 3x underwear, 9x washable sanitary pads and a toiletry pack. Dr May Mkhize has come onboard and she too formed an integral part of the education and discussion.

"It delights me when I see projects like these with such energy and enthusiasm. The girls of our future deserve to be comfortable and this donation is truly incredible' says Dr May Mkhize.

The environmentally friendly product has been tested extensively and the response from the girls was unbelievable. It's an incredible alternative to nothing, sharing or simply missing one week of classroom time every month.
