In a race event that was full of action and drama, the Ford team suffered a major setback during qualifying when team leader Shaun Duminy tore his Achilles tendon during qualifying. That left Gary Formato with the lonely task of taking on the field without his wingman Duminy.
The current leader Graham Nathan must have been rubbing his hands together with glee at the thought of not having the Ford team all over him, until he too had problems in qualifying when he lost a wheel. That saw Nathan in his Indy Oil VW Golf GTi starting from fourth position on the grid. And it wasn't a good start as his battery conked out and he was left standing.
His team mate Jacques Joubert also suffered a bad fate when his clutch pedal broke and then he drove over Gavin Cronje's Mini's exhaust and damaged the Golf's sump. But Nathan never gave up and drove an incredible race going on to win by four seconds. Gary Formato drove well and had to contend himself with fifth position.
Class T action continues at Zwartkops, Pretoria with round four of the Super Series on the 4th of May. We are holding thumbs for Shaun and wishing him a speedy recovery. Pun intended.
