From Sea To Sani - The Evolution Of KZN
From Sea To Sani - The Evolution Of KZN
The geological evolution of KZN commenced some 3.5 billion years ago.It involves the formation of volcanic islands arcs, similar to those now in the Western Pacific, followed by the colliding together of these arcs.
These collisions built up the continental crust and eventually led to the formation of the southern hemisphere supercontinent of Gondwana.
The process of breaking-up Gondwana sculptured the coastline of KZN and the Drakensberg. The fossils preserved in these rocks records the evolution of life from the earliest algal mats through to the dinosaurs of the 'Berg and eventually the advent of humans.
Prof Watkeys is an entertaining speaker who will give us a new perspective and understanding of the topography and substrates of our KZN landscape.
