Imbizo Gallery is doing it again! Wayward Dreams Exhibition - defining the unbearable lightness of being

Date: 2016-01-15
Swaying, floatingsuspended in the air, weightless buoyant and dreamlike, the "Wayward Dreams" is the title of their latest art exhibition, which opened last Thursday at Imbizo Gallery in Ballito. It's a collaboration of exquisite pieces by seven top South African artists.

Isabel Roos, curator and owner of Imbizo Gallery explains why sculpture holds such a prestigious place in her heart and gallery: "I have always loved sculpture but find lately that there has been a wonderful renewed interest in this art form from my clients. Because contemporary homes are now very often 'open plan' with large windows and double volume areas - the actual wall space is limited. Sculpture is the perfect art solution for these areas."

The sculptors that Isabel has included in this exhibition include Marke Meyer, whose bronze works have a wonderful poetic quality and contain an incredible lightness about them both literally and figuratively, especially in his suspended pieces.

Carl Roberts, another South Coast artist, creates extraordinary works from found natural materials: wood, stone, coral etc. The material dictates to him what really lies within the piece. His 'Black Pool' 2.3m long, wood and bone sculpture is a real conversation piece.

Speaking at the opening, Carl explained his motivation behind the sculpture. "I am jealous of the publicity that political art attracts. Any art with the Presidents penis in it seems to be "controversial", and a big hit that makes the Sunday papers. It has happened so often that I think the next time I will probably yawn. Political art is often unsubtle and crude. It is meant to be that way, so as to be unambiguous. I am not indifferent to what happens in Sunny South Africa despite being disinterested and distrustful of politics and politicians. The brouhaha filters through to me so that I too sometimes want to make a "statement" but I need to make something a little more subtle and layered." Carl said adding further, "If I am tangled in my own machinations of what I think art ought to be, I am sure that Freud would see "Black Pool" as simply the biggest, baddest penis of them all. Apart from shape and thrust, the smug, self-satisfied glee is plain for all to see." To understand this comment you must see the piece.

Isabel described artist Elizabeth Balcom saying, "Elizabeth focuses on the feminine, using the language of the Renaissance to explore and expose aspects of human nature. Her works demand a response."

On Gerhard van Eck Isabel offered, "Gerhard's pieces are created in interesting mediums including concrete and acrylic resin. His pieces have become known for their ability to capture inherent emotion and energy."

Isaac Sithole makes up the seventh wonder in this exhibition. Isaac, now past away, leaves an incredible collection of glowing woodcuts. A self confessed artist from the age of 12, Isaac's pieces have been selling quickly as they were made in small editions. His glowing colour combinations depict simple, humorous and ordinary village life.

The exhibition ends on 16 February, come and witness some outstanding pieces of art at Imbizo Gallery at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito.
