Public Relations practitioner by profession, artist by passion!

Public Relations practitioner by profession, artist by passion!

Date: 2015-10-02
Meet Ali Cockburn, local PR professional who has found her true passion in life - abstract art. We walked into her stunning beach front home to be confronted by a myriad of large canvases containing a kaleidoscope of acrylic colours, each one oozing Ali's vibrant personality.

The depth of movement on each canvas was phenomenal with Ali explaining how she takes her inspiration from the ocean - she's a huge water baby - ex national swimmer, she stand up paddle boards and occasionally surfs. Often painting through the night Ali admits to waking up and at times "checking" on her paintings. "I check that the movement and the mixture of colours is how I had imagined them to be. If not, I use various techniques and methods to create the look I want. It's incredibly therapeutic and rewarding to see the finished product".

Not only has Ali's work been appreciated by local residents and interior decorators alike, she more recently shipped off a consignment to Cape Town. An architect in the Seychelles also wants to use her work in his many projects.

Ali will hosting her first exhibition at North Bay Lodge in Durban North this Saturday, 3 October from 11.30 to 13.30 to raise funds for the lodge. North Bay Lodge is a small establishment and is home to 40 residents, all of which have a variety of mental illnesses. Ali's sister, Lee-Ann, is a resident at the lodge. 15% of the proceeds of her sales will be donated to the establishment.

The residents of North Bay Lodge are multicultural and their ages vary from 25 to over 70. A fairly small establishment, the lodge provides a facility where residents are able to have a "normal life" in a safe and protected environment and are able to have the social interaction which would not be possible outside a facility of this nature.

North Bay Lodge is situated at 21 Uitsig Road, Durban North - adjacent to the Hyper-by-the-Sea.
