Tgrsa GR Cup Set For Showdown

Tgrsa GR Cup Set For Showdown

Date: 2022-05-26

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GR Cup has seen exciting racing since its debut at the start of the 2022 season at the Killamey International Circuit in Cape Town. Experienced racer Ashley Oldfield set the early pace in the season, but strong performances by both Thomas Falkiner and Sean Nurse at Round 2 of the Cup, showed that Oldfield would have his work cut out to fend off the assault from his fellow motoring scribes.

The action moves to the Aldo Scribante Racetrack in Gqeberha for Round 3 this weekend, and the six motoring journalists who campaign in the Cup will all be in action. They are Oldfield, Falkiner and Nurse; as well as Jeanette Kok-Kritzinger, Lerato Matebese and Mark Jones.

The opening round saw veteran racing driver Deon Joubert stand in for Nurse, who had to attend his brother's wedding. Toyota Vice-President Anand Pather stepped in to race one of the stock GR Y aris at Zwartkops during Round 2, and former racing driver Mario de Sousa will get a tum behind the wheel this weekend - a different dynamic compared to the 20-valve Toyota Corolla RSi he campaigned in the mid 2000s.

Aldo Scribante is known for its fast and flowing nature, with some tricky sections that can catch out the unwary. Oldfield's experience is sure to stand him in good stead once again, as a number of the competitors will be making their first outing at the circuit this weekend. Despite this, the racing is sure to be close yet again, and the big question is if anyone can join Nurse and Oldfield as race winners in the GR Cup.

Both Falkiner and Jones have shown good pace in the past, with Falkiner claiming pole position at Zwartkops last month. They'll be in the hunt for good results again this weekend.
