Give It Horns Fundraising Party @ The Origin
The entire proceeds from the door on the night will be donated to the Tusk Trust, a charity dedicated to rhino and elephant conservation in Africa.
Give it Horns is a collaboration of ten women, who go by the name of Celebrate Life 2012 and are running the 21km Safaricom Half Marathon in Kenya on June 30, and Durban's The Origin night club to raise funds and awareness for rhino conservation.
"It's all about partying for the cause," said Origin co-owner Martin McHale. "The Celebrate Life team asked us to help out as a sponsor. Our challenge is to everyone to come to the party - let's do it for the rhino!"
"Anyone who loves Africa must be alarmed that 448 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa last year and 220 have already been slaughtered in the first five months of this year," said Debbie Reynolds of Celebrate Life 2012. "Who knows how many more have been killed throughout Africa in the last few years. As reported in Lawrence Anthony's book The Last Rhinos, the last surviving northern white rhinos were hunted to extinction in the Congo just recently.
"Like most people, I have been horrified by the senseless destruction of our African heritage outraged by pictures of these magnificent creatures mutilated for no reason except financial gain.
As a journalist I thought writing about all the committed people who are fighting to stop the carnage was enough. But is it? Perhaps not, which is why I have chosen 2012 to make a physical stand. The Celebrate Life team hopes to raise public awareness and R1 million for this very worthy cause."
Entrance for Give It Horns at The Origin is R60 until 10pm, R80 after. Members R50 until 10pm, R70 after. Doors open at 8.30pm.
