Kwadukuza Youth Clear About The Future

Kwadukuza Youth Clear About The Future

Date: 2017-06-30

KwaDukuza Municipality's (KDM) Youth and Sports Department held a dialogue on the historical events of, and those that led to, 16 June 1976 with a strident focus on youth development 23 years into the democratic dispensation of South Africa.

The event was in commemoration the youth of June 1976 who lost their lives in the struggle against unjust laws. The dialogue was held at the KwaDukuza Town Hall, comprising of youth formations of parties represented on the KwaDukuza Municipal Council.

Councillor John Phahla, Chairperson of the Youth and Sport Portfolio Committee on the KDM Executive Council during his opening remarks said, "We are gathered here today in celebration of the youth of 1976. Though we were not there, we have heard and learnt about what had happened. They wrote their own history. Today we must ask ourselves what the youth coming after us will refer to us as, whilst we endeavour on a trajectory to attain economic freedom, because we have democracy as the youth of today. However, we still linger in hope to achieve economic freedom. We, the youth, are at the center of triple challenges that are poverty, unemployment and inequality. Unless we shape up and fight, these will never change. We must stand up and change all of these historical consequences. This dialogue is to set a trajectory for our own future."

The Municipality is working towards the betterment of communities in a youth-centred approach, by engaging with the youth through various platforms and initiatives. That include learnership programmes, bursaries, job preparedness workshops, career expos and jobs either permanently, temporarily and/or the expanded public works programmes.

The youth engaged on a plethora of issues ranging from challenges to access higher education, unemployment, opportunities for small businesses, drugs, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy, as key obstacles they need assistance with in their communities. Furthermore, the youth made a plea that entry-level posts have requirements that prejudice first time jobseekers so that graduates are able to make use of their qualifications.

The youth collectively agreed that in order to move forward, they need to take initiative and "take things seriously", as there is no other way because opportunities are there but some peers misuse them, and forget that these opportunities are a product of struggles of generations before.
