Support the Feed the Babies Fund

Date: 2012-11-01
It will not be long before the malls are abuzz with a frenzy of shoppers and every eatery in the city is crowded with patrons ordering the finest on the menu. As the year draws to a close, most businesses will be winding down and, as a token of appreciation of their employee's hard work and dedication, many will host a year-end party.

Elsewhere, another scenario unfolds. In the rugged peri-urban and rural communities of KwaZulu-Natal children sit around in their impoverished environments without a decent meal or even a toy to look forward to.

But there is hope. Feed the Babies Fund operates in KZN's poorest regions, providing breakfast to approximately 9000 orphans and vulnerable children. Would the average parent send his or her child to crèche without breakfast? Probably not; breakfast is the most important meal of the day. At a cost of only R30 a day per child, our beneficiaries receive a nutritious breakfast with all the necessary vitamins and minerals to satisfy the recommended daily dietary allowance. The overall effect surpasses the cost of bowl of porridge. Children are healthy, attentive and playful.

"Since we got the cereal I've noticed the difference in the children, some were coughing and sad, now they are clever and playful. I had a few children, but since I've started giving them this cereal, the numbers have increased," says care-giver, Ms Fikisani Johne Mdluli, of the Bambanani crèche in Indaka.

"Every month Feed the Babies Fund gives the crèche porridge and this has made a huge difference in my community; since children come to the crèche without breakfast," says care - giver, Mrs Gugu Zwane of Siyazenzela crèche in Ladysmith.

Many other care-givers like Mrs Sygnoria Mthembu of Tholulwazi crèche and Pre-School in Inanda expressed their gratitude for the contribution of cereal and the phenomenal impact that the organisation has had in the lives of the children.

"Feed the Babies Fund provides far more than a bowl of porridge to children; we give them new life by counteracting malnutrition and fighting poverty. Children reach developmental milestones with ease. There is hope; the hope that they will now have the opportunity to grow into healthy young adults and become productive members of society," says Director of Feed the babies Fund, Dean Groenink.

This year, why not close off with a difference. Charge your staff an entrance fee of R30 to your year-end bash and donate the proceeds to Feed the Babies Fund. Help us make hunger an issue of the past. Call 031 201 4682.
