KwaDukuza Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu, has been accorded the opportunity to speak at the "ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability 2015 World Congress" in Seoul, South Korea.

He will be addressing the Congress on Thursday, 09 April 2015, focusing on Low Emission Development strategies and economic development.

Theevent will commence tomorrow 08 April 2015 until the 12th of April 2015.

"Our participation in this Congress reaffirms our growing as a competitive, innovative, and progressive city in the making. This Congress will also enhance the knowledge base and capacity of our municipal staff. We are encouraged by these developments and wish to congratulate the KwaDukuza Council for playing an exemplary role internationally".

ICLEI's international World Congress takes place every three years and provides mayors, local government politicians and staff, representatives from international agencies, national governments, donors and other partners with the opportunity for peer exchanges, knowledge-sharing, capacity building and on-site visits and exhibits.

The ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability is a powerful movement of 12 mega-cities, 100 super-cities and urban regions, 450 large cities as well as 450 small and medium-sized cities and towns in 84 countries, dedicated to sustainable development. ICLEI Africa accorded KwaDukuza Municipality this status in 2013.

The agency focuses on Energy and Climate Change, Water and Sanitation, Urban Biodiversity, Integrated Environmental Management, and Sustainable Consumption and Production.

Due to climate change interventions carried out by KwaDukuza Municipality over the years, Mthembu will be part of a panel made up of various leaders in the Congress.

"We appreciate the opportunity that has been afforded to KwaDukuza Municipality to participate in this Congress. This is the significant step towards our vision 2030, to see KwaDukuza as a globally competitive Municipality".

KwaDukuza Council has adopted a three year implementation plan of the programme. The programme focuses on the number of Climate Change programmes that KwaDukuza Municipality community will benefit from.
