Barrel Race Day

Barrel Race Day

Date: 2013-06-07
Durban's sailing community will be joining forces to raise funds for the unsung heroes, the NSRI with two events during the winter season, the first being the Barrel Race Day on Sunday 9 June.

The annual Barrel Race Day is an exhilarating event, which involves all of the competitive and recreational sailors. Members of the four yacht clubs, the Bluff, Island Sailing, Point and the Royal Natal Yacht Clubs will muster in the harbour to appreciate Durban's gorgeous winter weather.

The day begins with the traditional nautical sail past were the fleet line up in single file and then individually glide alongside the dignitary boat saluting to the Station Commander of the NSRI, the Commodores of the yacht clubs and VIPs from the port.

Once the formalities are out of the way, the yachts will then enjoy a race in the harbour tracing the traditional Wednesday night route. Adding the fun element, the day is themed with a nautical look, that of pirates. Going along with the theme, the NSRI will be cruising around the harbour 'kidnapping' sailors of the fairer sex and holding them up for ransom.

To end off the day's festivities, an auction will be held at the Royal Natal Yacht Club where items will be up for grabs with the funds raised going directly to the NSRI Station 5.

The Chairman for the fundraising committee, Jon Marshall stated, 'The NSRI do such fantastic work keeping our waters safe and we try to honour them and most of all, support them with these fundraising efforts.'

The final fundraising event will take place later this winter. A fine wine evening entitled 'A Barrel of Laughs' will be hosted at the Royal Natal Yacht Club and is open to the members of the public.

The National Sea Rescue Institute is a non-profit organisation that relies solely on donations, bequests and sponsorships to help patrol our beautiful coastline. The NSRI were launched in 1967 and assist in emergencies, aiding anyone at any time.

The yacht clubs are appealing to the public if anyone would like to support and donate funds to the NSRI, please to contact the fundraising committee, contacting Gayle on 031301 5425.
