Edison Power hands over of R2,5 million worth of Sanitary Products to the KZN Department Of Social Welfare

Date: 2020-03-27

Edison Power Group owned by Vivian Reddy donated over 500 000 sanitary pads and diapers valued at R2,500.000.00 to the KwaZulu Natal Department of Social Welfare at a handover function attended by Premier Sihle Zikalala and MEC for Social Development; Ms Nonhlanhla Khoza.

Mr Vivian Reddy said, "Through our investment of the sanitary pads and napkins we want to improve community well-being. We also recognise that in some communities poverty forces families to live with the bare necessities. We are aware that there are women and young girls of school going age who are battling to maintain their dignity and self-esteem as they do not have the requisite feminine products to manage menstruation said Reddy, the Chairman of Edison group."

He added that research has shown that underprivileged girls can miss up to 50 days of school per year due to lack of access to adequate feminine hygiene. Girls' choice of menstrual hygiene materials are often limited by cost, availability and social norms. Menstruation is a barrier to education for many of our girls.

Similarly, there are young mothers that don't have the means of buying napkins for the babies, with this donation we seek to make a contribution to our people hoping it would ease there burden a little.

The Premier of KZN, Sihle Zikalala applauded Edison Power and especially Mr Vivian Reddy for his philanthropist nature in so warmly giving to the underprivileged, not only on this occasion of the handover of the sanitary pads, but in his consistency over many years in serving the various organizations in need.

He called on partnerships with Government and said that there were many companies out there who could follow in the footsteps of the EDISON group.

The MEC for Social Development, Ms Khoza spoke of the dire need for sanitation products for young girls in the rural areas. When's it's that time of the month, our girls are stripped of dignity. She shared on the pain experienced from not having the necessities to keep them in school.

She applauded the generosity of Mr Reddy and the Edison Group for the gigantic donation of 7 containers of the sanitary items. These will be distributed to the various rural areas via NPOS and NGOS.

Dr Kooblal of Child Welfare South Africa awarded Mr Reddy a certificate of appreciation for his major contributions that prevented Child Welfare South Africa from closure.
