Umhlanga Summer Carnival

Umhlanga Summer Carnival

Date: 2012-11-29
Durban will once again be highlighting the holidays with fun in the sun. This year the Umhlanga Summer Carnival which takes place in the coveted coastal resort north of Durban, is scheduled to take place in and around Umhlanga from 8 - 23 December.

The year-end fun-filled carnival will be providing interesting day and evening activities for visitors to the north coast resort catering for both young and old.

The carnival kicks off with the Umhlanga Tourism Lizzard Summer Surf organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Surfing Association that takes place from 8 - 10 December with well-known local surfers all vying for the ultimate winning spot. The amateur division welcomes young, old, accomplished and social surfers all to participate.

Getting into the spirit of the festive season, the annual Carols by Candlelight at Granada Square, provides time for reflection and fellowship with a programme of beautifully chosen Christmas carols and seasonal songs sung by carollers with audience participation. This event is one of the calendar highlights with children participating in the singing and unwrapped gifts being collected for distribution to the less fortunate. This takes place as the sun sets on Wednesday 19 December at Granada Square n the Village.

On Saturday evening, 22 December, from 6pm until midnight Chartwell Drive will be closed to traffic to enable the Umhlanga Summer Carnival Castle Lite Street Party to take place, this family friendly street party is free and open to everyone. There will be stalls selling festive fare, plenty of al fresco meal options and live music.

The Umhlanga Summer Carnival 'There-and-Back' Keelboat Race will be taking place on the public holiday, the 16 of December. The oldest yacht club in Africa, the Royal Natal Yacht Club who hosts this event, will be racing off-shore of Umhlanga pier with the yachts turning around, creating a colourful backdrop and visual interest to beach visitors.

For the more active and adventurous, the Umhlanga Tourism Liberty Trail Run / Walk takes place on 16 December. Have your trainers on and be geared up to trail through the Umhlanga coastal area for an invigorating sunrise outing starting at 6am from Umhlanga Sands Resort. Entry forms are available from Umhlanga Tourism or online at https://www.roag.co.za. Or get in touch with the race organiser: Vaughn Smit on 083306 3557
