Bridgestone Production Championship Gets Underway

Bridgestone Production Championship Gets Underway

Author: Tomas Yoko

March the 1st and Zwartkops saw the 2014 season of the exciting Bridgestone Production Car Championshipd get underway.

All the old rivals were there, hungry as ever for the checkered flag and it was Graeme Nathan that took the first win in Class T after an exciting race. Ryan Rhode had a close call when the wheel studs of oneo fhis front wheels sheered off completely as he was coming out of turn two. Fortunately he managed to keep it together.

The Dealer Team Fords of local racing heroes Shaun Duminy and Gary Formato were also fraught with problems. Gary Formato's drive shaft failed in the first heat leaving Shaun to take fourth place, only to be disallowed due to his Ford Focus ST exceeding the maximum allowable turbo boost, costing the team all their points. A fate that was also suffered by Johan Fourie.

The weather played its part in adding to the excitement of the day with a light drizzle that turned into a full on drenching. Charl Smalberger lost control of his Golf5 GTi in the first corner after being nicked and was sent sliding into the tyre wall in turn one. Out came the red flag after Charl finished rolling his GTi and a lengthy clean up delayed proceedings.

Back on track and Shaun Duminy connected with his arch rival Graeme Nathan, rendering both cars a little difficult to navigate. Gary Formato, using a drive shaft lent to him by a loving fan, could not stave off the attentions of Lee Thompson in his MINI Cooper S, who then suffered brake hose failure. After more spills and thrills Gary Formato took the win comfortably but unfortunately his team mate Shaun Duminy's Focus was found to still be producing too much turbo boost and his seventh place was excluded from the results.

So Graeme took top honors for the day just under four hundredth of a second ahead of  Michael van Rooyen. Watch out for more action packed racing brought to you by SMD Group.
