Swim For Soup Initiative

Swim For Soup Initiative

Date: 2014-01-31
Brenda Scheepers, owner of Angel Projects and project manager of the Domino Foundation Soup kitchen and vegetable tunnel project have undertaken to swim 10 Open Water swimming events in aid of raising funds for the kitchen.

After a year of being involved with the kitchen and witnessing the incredible work they do, Brenda felt that more awareness was needed to highlight the extreme malnutrition suffered by children under the age of 6 years in disadvantaged communities. Malnutrition at a young age severely hampers the ability of a child to learn and develop much needed skills for coping later in life.

The Domino Foundation feeding program operates from two industrial kitchens, one in Durban North and one in Brookdale, adjacent to Amaoti.
The Crche Feeding Project serves porridge and soup to the needy in the Amaoti community through crches, schools, TAFTA, Happy Hours Mental Health School, Amaoti clinic and holiday clubs. As the number of orphans and child-headed households increase daily, the food that reaches the needy through the Domino Feeding programme is often their only meal of the day.

The Domino Foundation Feeding Programme serves close to 4500 meals every day (combination of porridge, soups and sandwiches). https://www.domino.org.za

The Swim for Soup Fundraiser will kick off with the 1st swim on 9 February, where both owners of Angel Projects will take part in the Midmar Mile 2014. All expenses for swims will be covered by Angel Projects and all funds raised will go directly to The Domino Foundation.

"I am looking forward to this challenge. It is not only combining a personal goal with the work I do, but also with a passion for those less fortunate. The project is not just about raising the much needed funds, but also raising awareness of those in need, especially ones that are not able to fend or provide for themselves." says Brenda.
