Search intensifies for missing Durban yachtsman
The families of Durban's three missing yachtsmen, Anthony Murray, Reg Robertson and Jaryd Payne are turning to online satellite technology to find the crew.
They are hoping this will help them locate the sailors who last made contact in January. Members of the public have been asked to visit the Tomnod website and assist the search through visual identification. They are asked to tag the satellite images they believe could show debris or the boat.
The Durban crew had been delivering a catamaran from Cape Town to Thailand. The families' spokesperson Matthew Thomas says they are hoping for the best.
''This is all sort of based on that old [saying] that many hands make light work. The guys who run the programme will have a look at all the marks that have dropped and then they collate them and then where there are areas where many people have seen something then at that point they can go and ask the satellite operators for a best quality image,'' he said.
It has been 90 days since Anthony Murray and his crew, Reginald Robertson and Jaryd Payne left Cape Town for Phuket to deliver a catamaran.
58-year-old Murray is the skipper of the yacht and has 25 years experience at sea.The trio had been carrying supplies for 65 days.Murray's younger sister Philippa Savage says the men had been in constant contact with their families.
Savage says they reported the missing catamaran to the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre last month but a rescue mission has not yet been dispatched because the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon has not been activated.
