Selborne Birding Day

Selborne Birding Day

Date: 2016-10-14
From novice birdwatchers to intrepid twitchers, everyone is invited to participate in the inaugural Selborne Birding Day to assist with the identification and documentation of all resident birds in the area on Saturday, 26 November.

Forming part of BirdLife South Africa's 32nd Birding Big Day, the Selborne Birding Day will run for 24 hours, starting at midnight on Friday, 25 November and continuing through to the following to midnight on Saturday, 26.

The purpose of Birding Big Day is to celebrate the bird diversity throughout the country while recording bird numbers and areas of habitat.

"With the re-opening of the Faye Barker Nature Trail last year we are getting a lot of interest in the resident birdlife," explained Selborne Environmental and Security Manager, Brett Wortmann. "We decided this would be a great opportunity, not only to contribute towards BirdLife South Africa's count and the great work they do for conservation, but to also officially commence documenting Selborne's incredible array of birds.

There will be a briefing held at 6.30pm on Friday, 25 November where participants will be given a demonstration on how to use the free BirdLasser App. This is a phenomenal tool for recording bird sightings that can be used by advanced and beginner birders alike.

Birders can participate for any amount of time during the 24 hours, however, teams must consist of between two and four people. Birds can be identified by call or sight as long as they are corroborated by at least one other person.

To spread the participants and maximise the area covered, The Pennington Conservancy has confirmed that the Nkomba Conservation Area, as well as the local forested areas, will be included in the Selborne Birding Day.

The entry fee of R150 will include a light lunch and a goody bag and there will also be a prize giving ceremony held on Saturday, 26 November, with awards for those with the most extensive bird list, finders of the mystery bird, as well as other fun prizes.

The Selborne Birding Day is open to all interested parties and the more participants, the stronger the information collected for Bird Life South Africa. Anyone interested in getting involved can contact the Selborne Body Corporate 039 - 975 8500.
