It might come as a surprise to most that since its release the Volkswagen Tiguan has become the brand’s highest selling model, amounting to a total of more than six million sales since its debut in 2007. A staple on the roads today, this car’s humble beginnings trace back to VW’s decision to leave its naming to a multiple choice of names put forward in a German car magazine where readers were to select from names thought up by Volkswagen’s in-house marketing team, being a portmanteau of the words Tiger and Leguan. Other names on the ballot included Samun, Nanuk, and Rockton.
Etymology aside, the cars overwhelming success can be attributed to its ability to deliver consistent quality and performance in the SUV class. High safety ratings, coupled with spacious seating, seamless phone integration and the latest technological advances in driver assistance, are just a few of the perks that come standard with the new Tiguan. Other notable features are its multiple displays, one for the infotainment system and another, which is a customisable heads-up display for the driver. It is on offer to the South African market in four engine configurations. The base model being a 1.4 Litre TSI pushing out 250 Newton meters of torque followed by two more highly specked options, sporting the same drivetrain specs, with the flagship being the 2.0 litre R-Line version boasting an extra 100 Newton meters and a few of the extra options coming standard such as heated leather seats and the Cockpit Pro multifunction digital display.
The Tiguan has always been the smart option for those in the market for a safe and comfortable family car and this year's model is no exception to the rule. With prices starting at R521 000.00 it is competitively priced, too. Visit a Volkswagen dealership near you today to book a test drive.
